The launching of this year’s 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence was held at Hilton Hotel Addis Ababa, on 25 November 2022 in the presence of H. E Mrs. Kimia Jundi, Women Caucus Chair at the House of Peoples Representative (HoPR), H.E Deputy Commissioner Rakeb Messele of the Ethiopia Human Rights Commission and representatives of Civil Society Organizations-CSOs and various government institutions.
In the morning a high-level panel discussion on addressing the needs and priorities of women with disabilities organized by Ethiopian Women with Disabilities National Association (EWDNA), in partnership with Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations (NEWA), Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and UN Women was held.
The GBV campaign group chaired by NEWA has given a press statement announcing “በግጭትም ሆነ በሰላም ወቅት ፆታዊ ጥቃት ይቁም! ዝም አንበል!” will be the theme for the group’s this year 16 days of activism against gender-based violence. The statement highlighted the need to raise public awareness on the prevalence and impacts of GBV, call for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to end violence against women and girls in Ethiopia and the need to raise awareness on conflict and emergencies related sexual violence.
The group also announced a donation drive called “ለእህቴ” (for my sister) to support women and children displaced because of the conflict in northern Ethiopia.
