THE RESEARCH REPORTS
These research reports, full and summary, presents the findings from the Ethiopian Women’s Status and Priorities study report. The study is a collaborative project of Network of the Ethiopian Women’s Associations (NEWA), OXFAM International in Ethiopia, and the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs (MoWSA).
The project was generously supported by the European Union (EU). The research was initiated to address the need for an up-to-date information on women’s experiences across various dimensions, regions and zones, which created an obstacle in accessing accurate consolidated data essential for informed decision-making and impactful interventions.
The objective of the study is, then, to generate comprehensive evidence on women’s status and priorities on an array of dimensions—economic, education, health, sexual and gender-based violence, psychological, political and civic, peace and security, access to justice—vital to women using data from households and women groups.
The survey covers a sample of 36,367 households living in both rural and urban areas in 12 regions and two City Administrations covering 119 zones/towns/sub cities in Ethiopia. The sample is representative both at regional and zonal levels. The qualitative data collection (PAR) engaged 440 women in-group discussions across selected eight regions.
The data collection took place from September 2023 up to December 2023, the study team conducted the research that used both quantitative (national survey) and qualitative data (Participatory Action Research- PAR). The report is synthesized from the two separate documents that included a Survey of the Ethiopian Women (SoEW) and Participatory Action Research (PAR) reports. The reports present various themes in women’s lives and it highlights women challenges and resilience. Subsequently, the showcases women’s aspirations and agency, encompassing their priorities, needs, and asks.
The summary report is translated in to four local languages- Afan Oromo, AfSomli, Amharic and Tigrigna.
