Aspire for an Ethiopian society in which gender equality is realized

MISSION

Promote gender equality and enhance the economic, social, political and legal empowerment of women and girls in Ethiopia, by strengthening synergy among its constituents, enabling joint effort of all actors and ensuring accountability towards protection of women’s rights.

Goal

Contribute towards an enhanced level of engagement of women in democracy, governance and development of Ethiopia by incremental percentage in 2025

NEWA’s MANDATES:

Strengthen joint effort to ensure that experiences and interests of women are considered in the process of formulating laws and policies at federal and regional levels. This requires concerted intervention of NEWA and its constituents.
To create forums for sharing experiences, consolidating and broadening achievement, exploring solutions for obstacles encountered, and strategizing towards collective action for change. As enhancing and scaling up the available best practices is a pertinent way to tackle structural problems. NEWA will Cooperate, network and exchange experience with civil society organizations (CSOs), Government, and other institutions concerned with women issues.
Ensure Ethiopia’s compliance with ratified national laws and international conventions on women’s rights. This is done through treaty monitoring and participation in regional an international treaty bodies and human rights systems.

Facilitate conditions for public education to ensure that women and men at all levels are made aware of women’s constitutional and legal rights, solicit practical support from various sectors to overcome the accumulated legacy;
Strengthen the capacity of women organizations to stand strong for the gender equality cause and fight against GBV/ VAW and HTPs.
Serve as the common voice of women’s associations and organizations. This will be accomplished by serving as a platform of its members and by voicing the interests of its members on relevant forums, polices and law deliberations.
